Episcopal Charities, a Bay area non-profit organization established in 1977, has led the charge by servicing those in need, from the poor and hungry to the disadvantaged and displaced. They have successfully advocated for thousands in need over the decades by addressing the root causes of poverty through the funding of various charitable agencies in key areas.
Despite the importance of their mission, however, the organization felt that their website wasn’t living up to its full potential in getting the word out, drawing only a handful of visitors each day. Episcopal Charities asked Somethumb to give their website a complete overhaul that would enable them to reach more people and provide the valuable information visitors were seeking.
Challenges & Objectives
Episcopal Charities’ previous site was nice but didn’t adequately convey the organization’s mission or provide enough information on its many services and how to find them. They work with a number of organizations throughout San Francisco providing various resources, some of which overlapped, some of which were unique to the specific area. A solution was needed to keep these services organized by region so they could be easily identified and located.
Process & Design
The cornerstone of Episcopal Charities’ mission philosophy is their focus on three distinct areas in their efforts to address the primary causes of poverty: education, healthcare and environment. Somethumb set out to create a new website design that would clearly illustrate this philosophy and identify the programs and services associated with all three areas.
A new section of the website is devoted to highlighting the organization’s focus on education, healthcare and environment, with a description of each project and a listing of local agencies with whom they have partnered to provide services.
Of particular importance is the new custom-designed map illustrating Episcopal Charities’ various Action Networks. The map, which is color-coded by region, allows one to find local services and projects in his or her own region with one click.
Using WordPress software as a base, the new website was developed to make administrative maintenance as painless as possible. Partner agency listings can be created once, then added to or shared among different Action Networks, eliminating the need to duplicate text. Staff members can easily be added, updated and sorted on the website’s contact page.
The main objective of this project was to relaunch Episcopal Charities’ brand by giving their website a fresh new design that would provide useful information and also bring about a large influx of new visitors. In only a short time, this goal has been fully achieved. According to Communications & Program Manager, Jory Sandusky, the redesign has caused their web traffic to soar from a bit over 100 visitors per month to well over 300 unique visitors per month!
When they arrive, there is plenty for new visitors to see and learn. The News section features an enhanced new blog along with the latest news items and archives of their monthly newsletter. Attractive link graphics invite visitors to view photos from the latest events or learn how they can volunteer or donate to various causes. The colorful new map quickly guides them to available services in their area and provides information on partner agencies.
Episcopal Charities is thrilled with their clean new design and user-friendly aesthetic and with the results it has delivered.
